clara barton

BClarissa Harlowe Barton was born on December 25, 1821, in Oxford, Massachusetts, to Stephen and Sarah Barton. She was the youngest of five children. Clara's father was a farmer and horse breeder (who also served as a captain in the French and Indian Wars), while her mother Sarah managed the household. The two later helped found the first Universalist Church in Oxford.
When Clara was eleven, her brother David became her first patient after he fell from a rafter in their unfinished barn. Clara stayed at his side for three years and learned to administer all his medicines, including the "great, loathsome crawling leeches".
s she continued to develop an interest in nursing, Clara may have drawn inspiration from stories of her great-aunt, Martha Ballard, who served the town of Hallowell (later Augusta), Maine, as a midwife for over three decades. Ballard helped deliver nearly one thousand infants between 1777 and 1812, and in many cases administered medical care in much the same way as a formally trained doctor of her era

calories in coffee

starbucksdrink.jpg

It's about Milk and Sugar

When we talk about about a coffee high in calories - we are really talking about the additives we put in it. Caffeine is a bitter chemical and products containing caffeine are bitter - so we tend to sweeten them up - with milk, sugar, or syrups.
The larger the drink volume - the more milk you will be getting. With espresso-based drinks (latte, cappuccino) - the amount of water in the drink is minimal (typically 45mls / 1.5 fl. ounces per espresso shot). You do the math: a 16 ounces Grande Latte from Starbucks will have two espresso shots (~ 3 oz) -- that leaves around 13 ounces of milk (depending on how much foam tops the drink) - so there's 198 Calories already (if the milk is 2% reduced fat).

calories in coffee

There is considerable confusion over the caloric content of coffee. Not all coffee drinks are high in calories. Coffee (without additives) is almost a zero calorie drink.
Here is a complete guide to understanding coffee calories.

Cervical Cancer

Diagram of female reproductive organs

What is the cervix?

The cervix is part of a woman's reproductive system. It's in the pelvis. The cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb).
The cervix is a passageway:
-The cervix connects the uterus to the vagina. During a menstrual period, blood flows from the uterus through the cervix into the vagina. The vagina leads to the outside of the body.
-The cervix makes mucus. During sex, mucus helps sperm move from the vagina through the cervix into the uterus.
-During pregnancy , the cervix is tightly closed to help keep the baby inside the uterus. During childbirth, the cervix opens to allow the baby to pass through the vagina.

cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is malignant neoplasma of the cervix utery or cervical area. It may present with vaginal bleeding but symptoms may be absent until the cancer is in its advanced stages. Treatment consists of  (including local excision) in early stages and chemoterapy and radiotherapy in advanced stages of the disease.
Causes : Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection with high-risk types has been shown to be a necessary factor in the development of cervical cancer.] HPV DNA may be detected in virtually all cases of cervical cancer. Not all of the causes of cervical cancer are known. Several other contributing factors have been implicated
In the United States each year there are more than 6.2 million new HPV infections in both men and women, according to the CDC, of which 10 percent will go on to develop persistent dysplasia or cervical cancer.

abnormal pap smear

Tracee Cornforth

What is a Pap smear?
A pap smear is a routine screening test done by your provider during a pelvic exam. The surface of the cervix (mouth or neck of the womb or uterus) is scraped with a spatula and the scraped-off cells from the cervix are fixed on a glass slide. This slide is called a pap smear and is sent to a special lab where it is processed and evaluated by highly trained technicians and doctors. B
How do you get a diagnosis or know what’s wrong?
Specially trained providers use an instrument called a "colposcope" to examine your cervix carefully. The colposcope is similar to a microscope. It is attached to a floor stand and magnifies the cervix under a powerful beam of light. By using this instrument, the doctor can locate any suspicious areas on the surface of the cervix that are not visible to the naked eye. The provider will take small tissue samples (biopsies) from these areas. The specimens are sent to the pathology lab for processing and evaluation. Upon receipt of results of biopsy, you will be contacted by your provider who will then read the report and discuss the treatment advised.

Gonorrhea

Photograph of colored condoms
Gonorrhea is a curable Sexual transmited disease . It is most common in young adults. The bacteria that cause gonorrhea can infect the genital tract, mouth or anus.

Gonorrhea does not always cause symptoms, especially in women. In men, gonorrhea can cause pain when urinating and discharge from the penis. If untreated, it can cause epididymitis, which affects the testicles and can lead to infertility.

In women, gonorrhea can cause bleeding between periods, pain when urinating and increased discharge from the vagina. If untreated, it can lead to PID which causes problems with pregnancy and infertility. Gonorrhea can pass from mother to baby during pregnancy.
You can cure gonorrhea with antibiotics prescribed by your health care provider. Correct usage of latex condoms greatly reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading gonorrhea.

pelvic inflammatory disease

Illustration of the female reproductive system

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection and inflammation of the female reproductive organs. It can scar the tubes that carry eggs from the ovary to the uterus which can lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic pain and other problems.
You are at risk if you Are sexually active and younger than 25
  • Have more than one sex partner
  • Douche
Some women have no symptoms. Others have pain in the lower abdomen, fever, smelly vaginal discharge, irregular bleeding or pain during intercourse. Antibiotics can cure PID. Early treatment is important – waiting too long increases the risk of infertility.

Pelvic inflammatory disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease (or disorder) (PID) is a generic term for inflamattion  of thes, and/or ovaries as it progresses to scar formation with adhesion to nearby tissues and organs. This may lead to infections. PID is a vague term and can refer to viral, fungal, parasitic, though most often bacterial infections.

Diagnosis :Symptoms in PID range from subclinical (asymptomatic) to severe. If there are symptoms then  l motion tenderness, lower, new or different discharge, , or irregular  bleeding may be noted.

Prognosis :Although the PID infection itself may be cured, effects of the infection may be permanent. This makes early identification by someone who can prescribe appropriate curative treatment very important in the prevention of damage to the reproduction system

  • thoracic outlet syndrome

    Is there any treatment?

Treatment begins with exercise programs and physical therapy to strengthen chest muscles, restore normal posture, and relieve compression by increasing the space of the area the nerve passes through.   Doctors will often prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as naproxen or ibuprofen) for pain.  If this doesn't relieve pain, a doctor may recommend thoracic outlet decompression surgery to release or remove the structures causing compression of the nerve or artery.

    What is the prognosis?

The outcome for individuals with TOS varies according to type. The majority of individuals with TOS will improve with exercise and physical therapy.  Vascular TOS, and true neurogenic TOS often require surgery to relieve pressure on the affected vessel or nerve.

    What research is being done?

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and other institutes at the National Institutes of Health support research in TOS through grants to major medical institutions across the country.  Much of this research focuses on finding better ways to diagnose and treat TOS.

    thoracic outlet syndrome

    What is thoracic outlet syndrome?

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition whereby symptoms are produced from compression of nerves or blood vessels, or both, because of an inadequate passageway through an area (thoracic outlet) between the base of the neck and the armpit. The thoracic outlet is surrounded by muscle, bone, and other tissues. Any condition that results in enlargement or movement of the tissues of or near the thoracic outlet can cause the thoracic outlet

What are symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome?
Symptoms include neck, shoulder, and arm pain, numbness, or impaired circulation to the extremities (causing discoloration). Often symptoms are reproduced when the arm is positioned above the shoulder or extended.

    thoracic outlet syndrome

The right brachial plexus with its short branches, viewed from in front. (Brachial plexus and subclavian artery are visible running in parallel near the center. Anterior scalene is visible in upper right.)Thoracic outlet syndrome(TOS) is a syndrome involving compression at the superior thorac. involving compression of a neurovascular bundle passing between the anterior scene. It can affect the brachial plexus (nerves that pass into the arms from the neck), and/or the subclavian artery or rarely thevein hich does not normally pass through the scalene hiatus (blood vessel  as they pass between the chest and upper extremity). Rarely a Pancoast tumour in the apex of the lung may be the cause.

The compression may be positional (caused by movement of the calive collarbone) and shoulder  arm movement) or static (caused by abnormalities or enlargement or spasm of the various muscles surrounding the arterye veins and brachial plexus), a first rib fixation and a cervical rib.
Common orthopaedic tests used are the Adson's test, the CostoClavicular manoeuvre and the Hands-Up test of East. Careful examination and X-ray are required to differentially diagnose between positional and static aetiology, first rib fixations, scalene muscle spasm and a cervical rib or fibrous band.

    Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

How Do I Find Out if I Grind My Teeth?

Because grinding often occurs during sleep, most people are unaware that they grind their teeth. However, a dull, constant headache or sore jaw is a telltale symptom of bruxism. Many times people learn that they grind their teeth by their loved one who hears the grinding at night.Learn about the effects of and solutions for teeth grinding. The habit of grinding, gnashing, grating, or clenching the teeth is termed bruxism, and millions of adults and children are affected by this condition. While its exact cause is unknown, most experts believe that bruxism can occur as a response to increased psychological stress.
If you suspect you may be grinding your teeth, talk to your dentist. He or she can examine your mouth and jaw for signs of bruxism, such as jaw tenderness and abnormalities in your teeth.

    crest whitestrips

Teeth whitening strips can only be used to bleach front teeth.

Do you feel that your teeth didn't white enough ? and you want to increase your teeth color become more white with any whitening product ?
Any whitening strips product can usually be counted on to cover over at least the user's center six front teeth (eyetooth to eyetooth). How much further beyond this they will reach simply depends on the cumulative "length" of your teeth in relationship to the length of the strip.
Some whitening strips manufacturers (Rembrandt ®) have tried to capitalize on this sizing deficit by making their whitening strips relatively longer than traditional Whitestrips ®. Additionally, Crest's Whitestrips ® Supreme strips are longer in length than other Whitestrips ® products. [Crest White Strips is a registered trademark of the Proctor & Gamble Company.]

    grinding teeth

How to Stop Grinding Teeth at Night?

Twenty percent of all adults grind their teeth at night. Grinding (bruxism) can be caused by stress or an unconscious attempt to smooth out a poor bite. It wears down and may fracture teeth, and it can lead to gum and jaw problems. Here's how you can prevent the inevitable permanent tooth damage.
      • Make an appointment with your dentist, who will make a custom mouthpiece for you to wear at night. This will prevent further damage to your teeth and may reduce your tendency to grind.
      • 2
Ask your dentist to file down your "high spots," which are any teeth that interfere with a comfortable, aligned bite.
      • 3
Hold a warm, damp cloth next to your face for 10 minutes before you go to bed to help calm your jaw muscles.
      • 4
Relax before bedtime by meditating, taking a hot bath or stretching.
      • 5
        Reduce alcohol and caffeine consumption.
      • 6
Learn to reduce stress. Take stress management classes and learn relaxation techniques.

    grinding teeth

Teeth grinding is clinically referred to as bruxism. Simply defined, it is the act of consciously or unconsciously clenching your teeth either during the day or while you sleep. Bruxism is considered both a medical and a dental problem. This is because it affects both the teeth and all of the structure near it, including the head.
People grind their teeth for a number of reasons. Doctors believe that it is because of stress. Dentists say that it happens because one's teeth are not properly aligned with each other. T

One will only know if he or she suffers from bruxism if the symptoms appear. The symptoms of this condition vary greatly with the cause. Some or all of the symptoms may appear. So, if your roommate tells you that you clench your teeth in your sleep, don't put it aside. Consult your dentist right away.
Dentists are bruxism's first line of experts. They are the people who can confirm whether you are participating in teeth grinding or not. To know for sure, dentists perform a series of checks and exams with their patients.

    Orthorexia

Kristie Rutzel was in high school when she began adhering precisely to the government food pyramids. As the Virginia native learned more about healthy eating, she stopped ingesting anything processed, then restricted herself to whole foods and eventually to 100% organic. By college, the 5-ft. 4-in. communications major was on a strict raw-foods diet, eating little else besides uncooked broccoli and cauliflower and tipping the scales at just 68 lb. Rutzel, now 27, has a name for her eating disorder: orthorexia, a controversial diagnosis characterized by an obsession with avoiding foods perceived to be unhealthy.

    orthorexia

"Orthorexia" is defined as an obsession with "healthy or righteous eating". The phrase was first created in 1997 by California doctor Steven Bratman, and refers to people who create severely limited diets in the name of healthy eating. It often begins with someone's simple and genuine desire to live a healthy lifestyle. The person may choose to stop eating red meat, but eventually cuts out all meat; then all processed foods, and will eventually eat only specific foods that are prepared in very specific ways.

Some psychologists have noticed a change in attitude towards people who have "quirky" eating habits, which may contribute to the rising trend of orthorexic-type diets. Systems like the Atkins Diet - which limits the intake of carbohydrates - have made out-of-the-ordinary dietary restrictions seem normal. And many bookstore shelves are replete with this type of material.

"Where 'that quirkiness used to reduce your status', says Deanne Jade, a psychologist and founder of the National Centre for Eating Disorders in Britain, 'the attachment to strange eating systems and theories is now supported by a thriving industry and gives people a sense of status.'"1

    Leprosy

    Take the MRSA Quiz!
Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is a chronic infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. It results in damage primarily to the peripheral nerves (the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord), skin, testes, eyes, and mucous membrane of the nose.

    • Leprosy ranges from mild (with one or a few skin areas affected) to severe (with many skin areas affected and damage to many organs).
    • Rashes and bumps appear, the affected areas become numb, and muscles may become weak.
    • The diagnosis is suggested by symptoms and confirmed by a biopsy of the affected tissue.
    • Antibiotics can stop leprosy from progressing but cannot reverse any nerve damage or deformity.
Classification: Leprosy can be categorized by the type and number of skin areas affected. Those with 5 or fewer affected skin areas have leprosy that is called paucibacillary. People should have no bacteria detectable on samples from those areas. Those with 6 or more affected areas have leprosy that is called multibacillary. People may or may not have bacteria detected on samples from those areas.

    Leprosy Today
Today, the diagnosis and treatment of leprosy is easy and most endemic countries are striving to fully integrate leprosy services into existing general health services.
This is especially important for those under-served and marginalised communities most at risk from leprosy, often the poorest of the poor.

Access to information, diagnosis and treatment with multidrug therapy (MDT) remain key elements in the strategy to eliminate the disease as a public health problem, defined as reaching a prevalence of less than 1 leprosy case per 10,000 population. MDT treatment has been made available by WHO free of charge to all patients worldwide since 1995, and provides a simple yet highly effective cure for all types of leprosy.

    deviated septum

A deviated septum occurs when the thin wall (nasal septum) inside your nose is displaced to one side. Your septum separates your right and left nasal cavities and ideally is situated in the center of your nose, equally separating the two sides. In about 80 percent of people, however, the nasal septum is displaced, making one nasal passage smaller.

    Symptoms
Symptoms of a deviated septum can include:
    • Facial pain, headaches, postnasal drip.
    • Blockage of one or both nostrils
    • Nasal congestion, sometimes on one side
    • Frequent nosebleeds
    • Frequent sinus infections
    • Noisy breathing during sleep in infants and young children

Kate Middleton's Dukan diet could be dangerous

    Kate

Dukan Diet, which is supposed to be the French version of the Atkins Diet, and which is allegedly being used by Kate Middleton, has been deemed as dangerous by a dietician.
The Dukan Diet has been making waves in Europe and now in America, but New York City-based dietician Tanya Zuckerbort has said it could be dangerous.

"The Dukan Diet is not based on any scientific data, and seems to be a modified version of the Atkins Diet," Fox News quoted Zuckerbort, as saying.
"This diet is protein-centric and highly restrictive in the initial stages, without much research to back it up," she said.
The Dukan Diet has been popular in France for years, and now Dr. Pierre Dukan is bringing his weight-loss plan overseas to North America.
It consists of high-protein, low-fat meals but adds very large amounts of water and oat bran.

French Diet Gets Royal Treatment, but Experts Scoff
Americans looking to slim down for summer may soon be cheering "Vive la France" when “The Dukan Diet” book makes its American debut on April 19th. But U.S. nutrition experts are already saying "mon Dieu!" about yet another carb-hating, protein-loving, weight-loss plan.

Dukan regimen invades America just as speculation builds that Kate Middleton and her mum are following it to lose weight for the royal wedding. Carole Middleton, mother of the princess-to-be, has claimed to be a Dukan fan, telling the British press it helped her lose four pounds in four days. In the U.S., Dukan has been gaining buzz through celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Gisele Bundchen, both of whom reportedly lost their baby weight on it.

    Gum Disease

Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means "around the tooth." Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed.
     Animation of gum disease progression
    Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.

Diagram comparing healthy and diseased gums

    Periodontitis

Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. The toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Often, this destructive process has very mild symptoms. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.

    measles

Measles is a very contagious (easily spread) illness caused by a virus.

        Causes
The infection is spread by contact with droplets from the nose, mouth, or throat of an infected person. Sneezing and coughing can put contaminated droplets into the air.
Those who have had an active measles infection or who have been vaccinated against the measles have immunity to the disease. Before widespread vaccination, measles was so common during childhood that most people became sick with the disease by age 20. The number of measles cases dropped over the last several decades to almost none in the U.S. and Canada.

        Symptoms
Symptoms usually begin 8 - 12 days after you are exposed to the virus. This is called the incubation period.
Symptoms may include: Bloodshot, Coughr, Fever

    legionnaires disease

    What Causes of Legionnaires ?

Legionnaires' disease, also called Legionellosis is a lung infection, a form of pneumonia which can be fatal, caused by the legionella bacterium. The name Legionnaires' disease emerged in 1976 - in July there was an outbreak of pneumonia among delegates at a convention of the American Legion in Philadelphia. In January of the following year, the causative agent was identified as a previously unknown bacterium, which was subsequently named Legionella.

Most cases of Legionnaires' disease occur as single isolated cases, not linked to any recognized outbreak, despite the infection's significant media attention. If outbreaks do occur, they tend to do so in the summer or early autumn; but they may occur at any time of year.

    tendonitis

    How Tendonitis Occurs

A tendon is the end part of a muscle that attaches the muscle to the bone.  The normally very elastic and soft muscle tapers off at the end to form the much more dense and stiff tendon.  While this density makes the  tendons stronger, the lack of elasticity of the tendon and the constant pulling on its attachment to the bone with movement, makes it much more susceptible to a low level of tearing at a microscopic level.

    Common Areas of Tendon inflammation

The most common tendon areas that become inflamed are the elbow, wrist, biceps, shoulder (including rotator cuff attachments), leg, knee (patellar), ankle, hip, and Achilles.  Of course, tendonitis can will vary with each person, as it strikes the areas you use most.

     Tendonitis Symptoms
Symptoms can vary from an achy pain and stiffness to the local area of the tendon, to a burning that surrounds the whole joint around the inflamed tendon. With this condition, the pain is usually worse during and after activity, and the tendon and joint area can become stiffer the following day.

    tendonitis

    What is Tendonitis?

Tendons themselves are cords of tough, fibrous connective tissue that attach muscles to bones. Tendons are found throughout the entire human body. Tendonitis is the inflammation and irritation of these tendons. If the normal smooth gliding motion of a tendon is impaired the tendon will become inflamed and tendonitis will start to occur. Tendonitis, if it's caught early, can be easily treated and cured.

    Symptoms of Tendonitis

    leigh syndrome

Leigh syndrome is a degenerative neurological condition, marked by almost identical brain changes (e.g., focal, bilaterally, symmetric lesions in the basal ganglia, thalamus, and brainstem).  There exist variability in the symptoms and genetic causes of Leigh syndrome.
The symptoms vary from severe neurologic abnormalities to a near absence of abnormalities. Most often, the central nervous system is affected, resulting in developmental delay and regression, seizures, nystagmus, ophthalmoplegia, optic atrophy, ataxia, hypotonia, spasticity, and breathing abnormalities.

Cases in which neurological function is near normal are very rare. In general, the symptoms of Leigh syndrome develop during childhood; however, in some rare cases, symptoms do not begin until adolescence or adulthood.[1] Leigh syndrome can be caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA or nuclear DNA.

    grete waitz cancer

Even if you are not well-versed in road racing or New York Marathon history, Grete Waitz is a name that you know. Waitz was a world-record holder and two-time olympian at the 3,000 meter distance when she turned her sights on the marathon and set a world record (2:32:30) at the distance in her first 26.2 mile race, the 1978 New York City Marathon. Waitz would break her own record three more times through 1983 (2:25:29).

Waitz participated in 15 marathons over the years, with wins at 13 of those: 9 NYC Marathons (between 1978 and 1988), 2 London Marathons (1983, 1986), Stockholm (1988) and the first marathon championships for women (1983). Beyond her prominence in the race, Waitz was truly a pioneer and did much to promote the cause of distance running for women.
Earlier this year, this pioneer in women's running was diagnosed with cancer. Wanting to keep this out of the spotlight, Grete and her close family and friends did their best to keep this secret from the public. Waitz, for the first time, met with the press before the 2005 ING New York City Marathon and spoke candidly about her situation for the first time.

Protein is a major stimulant in the quenching of hunger feelings, as well as helping to raise the performance level of some body function. The mixture of less hunger and a boost in body functions is what makes this diet an easy to follow and successful plan.

    Bilateral Leg Weakness

Everyone by now has heard that Joe Mauer has been placed on the 15-day DL due to "bilateral leg weakness." What not everyone knows is what that exactly means and how serious it can be.
Bilateral leg weakness is muscle weakness in both legs. Symptoms can include weakness, fatigue, muscle aches, fever, muscle pain, leg pain, and tingling or numbness in the legs. The condition is neurological, not musculoskeletal. That is, it has nothing to do with Mauer's recent arthroscopic knee surgery.

The key to treating bilateral leg weakness is determining the underlying cause. It's often an indicator of something else, and can be brought on by a number of conditions. It could be a viral infection or the by-product of a bout with influenza. It can be caused by a tick bite or West Nile Virus. In rare cases it can be a sign of multiple sclerosis, multiple myeloma, or even ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Bilateral Weakness in the Leg Muscles

    bilateral leg weakness

Bilateral weakness in the leg muscles can be as mild as a generalized feeling of fatigue in your legs or as extreme as complete paralysis. Bilateral weakness indicates a problem in your central nervous system -- in your brain, spinal cord or nerves. Many disease processes or trauma can cause bilateral weakness in your legs.

    Causes
Bilateral leg weakness can be caused by many things. For example, infection is is thought to be involved in 40 percent of cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disorder of the nervous system, according to an article in a 2008 issue of "Neurology." This weakness may also be caused Tick paralysis or West Nile virus. Trauma or disease that causes damage to your spinal cord or a tumor compressing the nerves that affect your legs can also cause this symptom. A stroke may also cause this problem. Diseases such as diabetic neuropathy cause nerve damage, in particular to the extremities. Genetic problems such as muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease or multiple sclerosis can also cause bilateral leg weakness.
     Treatment
Treatment of bilateral leg weakness depends on the cause of the problem. In the case of infectious or genetic causes, the treatment is largely to reduce symptoms, because a cure is not always available. In trauma, the goal is to alleviate the pressure on the spinal cord as soon as possible to preserve the nerve. The same is true of disc disease; correction of the structural problem alleviates the symptoms in many cases.

    legionnaires disease

    What is Legionnaires' disease?

Legionnaires' disease (LEE-juh-nares) is caused by a type of bacteria called Legionella. The bacteria got its name in 1976, when many people who went to a Philadelphia convention of the American Legion suffered from an outbreak of this disease, a type of pneumonia (lung infection). Although this type of bacteria was around before1976, more illness from Legionnaires' disease is being detected now. This is because we are now looking for this disease whenever a patient has pneumonia.

Each year, between 8,000 and 18,000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires' disease in the U.S. However, many infections are not diagnosed or reported, so this number may be higher. More illness is usually found in the summer and early fall, but it can happen any time of year.

    bipolar ii disorder

    What Is Bipolar II Disorder?

Bipolar II disorder (pronounced "bipolar two") is a form of mental illness. Bipolar II is similar to bipolar I disorder, with moods cycling between high and low over time.

However, in bipolar II disorder, the "up" moods never reach full-on mania. The less-intense elevated moods in bipolar II disorder are called hypomanic episodes, or hypomania.
A person affected by bipolar II disorder has had at least one hypomanic episode in life. Most people with bipolar II disorder also suffer from episodes of depression. This is where the term "manic depression" comes from.
In between episodes of hypomania and depression, many people with bipolar II disorder live normal lives.

    What is Bipolar 2 Disorder?

The signs which would lead to a diagnosis of bipolar 2 disorder are:
    • One or more major depressive episodes
    • At least one hypomanic episode
    • There has never been a manic or mixed episode
    • Another disorder is not responsible for symptoms
    • Symptoms cause distress or impair functioning
Symptoms and characteristics of depression include:
    • Decreased energy
    • Weight loss or gain
    • Despair
    • Irritability
    • Uncontrollable crying
Symptoms and characteristics of hypomania include:
