carb lovers diet : Losing weight on the "Carb Lovers" diet

In a slap-down to all those high-protein diet fads, Health magazine has come out with its own diet fad -- a best-selling book called The Carb Lovers Diet -- which is getting a lot of buzz this week.
carb.jpg .It says you can lose weight by getting 10 to 15 grams a day of "resistant starch." This starch -- found in foods like bananas and potatoes -- is tough for the body to digest and often found in fiber-rich foods.
The Health magazine editors who authored the book bill it as "a dietitian-approved road map proven to melt off 10, 35, even 100 plus pounds forever." They cite research showing that the slimmest people eat the most carbs (in the form of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables), while the heaviest people eat the fewest.
That's not exactly shocking news. What's clear is that there are carbs and carbs, and you can feel free to indulge in the starch-resistant, high-fiber ones as long as you avoid the highly processed ones like bagels, brownies, French fries, and doughnuts.
The Carb Lovers diet names 10 fat-burning carbs: bananas, white beans, lentils, oatmeal, potatoes, plantains, garbanzo beans, pearl barley, whole-wheat pasta, and brown rice.
"There's nothing magical with this diet," says Boston University nutritionist Joan Salge Blake, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. "The issue here is to eat foods that will fill you up before they fill you out; any food high in fiber will do that."
She points to research showing that having a salad right before your meal can help reduce the total calories you eat at that meal by 10 percent. Of course, you have to go easy on those calorie- and fat-laden dressings.
Caveats apply to those starch-resistant carbs as well. You can't fry those potatoes or plantains if you want those waistline reducing benefits.

Other studies have shown that eating vegetable soups before the main course has a similar filling effect. Both of these have to do with water content and fiber content as well as resistant starches that provide a full feeling that encourages you to eat less.
