As if there are not already enough medical specialties and sub-specialties to lure physicians away from a career in primary care, yet another new specialty may become common in the near future. At least one industry expert, an academic physician out of Chicago, predicts that a new type of physician specialist will soon emerge, providing comprehensive care of chronically ill patients.
These physicians, which may be known as "comprehensivists" will provide continuity of care and knowledge of the patient's health case that hospitalists are often unable to provide due to the nature of their shift-based schedules. At least that's the idea behind the role of comprehensivists, according to recent UPI report.
